There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is not legal. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that contains numerous comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
