There is an appealing history to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are apparently required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel building that contains numerous luxuries on top of the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
